Green Revolution in Midlands Public Transportation: Introducing Zero-Emission Buses
Key Ideas
  • The COMET in Midlands is introducing two battery-electric and two hydrogen fuel cell buses with a $2.9 million grant, aiming to provide cleaner and greener transportation options.
  • The transition to zero-emission buses will reduce harmful pollutants, improve air quality, and lower long-term operational costs while enhancing passenger comfort.
  • Battery-electric buses can travel up to 254 miles on a single charge, require less maintenance, and are quieter than diesel buses, while hydrogen fuel cell buses offer a longer range and emission-free operation.
  • The project is supported by the Richland County Transportation Penny Salex Tax, showcasing a commitment to sustainable transit and regional growth in Midlands.
The Midlands region is on the path to a green revolution in public transportation with the introduction of zero-emission buses by The COMET. With the aid of a $2.9 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in 2021, The COMET is set to unveil two battery-electric and two hydrogen fuel cell buses, marking a significant shift towards sustainability. These buses will replace aging diesel buses, offering Midlands residents cleaner and environmentally friendly transportation options. The project, supported by the Richland County Transportation Penny Salex Tax, includes the installation of charging equipment and hydrogen refueling infrastructure. The transition to zero-emission buses is expected to bring a host of benefits, including the reduction of harmful pollutants, improved air quality, and decreased long-term operational costs. Battery-electric buses will have a range of 254 miles and require minimal maintenance, contributing to lower overall expenses. Hydrogen fuel cell buses, on the other hand, can travel up to 370 miles on a single refill, emit only water vapor, and feature a rapid refueling process, enhancing operational efficiency. The shift to these environmentally friendly buses not only promotes cleaner air and public health but also contributes to a quieter and more comfortable ride for passengers. The COMET's initiative reflects a commitment to innovative transit solutions, sustainable practices, and regional growth, as stated by the Chair of The COMET Board of Directors, Allsion Terracio.
