India Poised to Lead Global Hydrogen Energy Production and Exports
Key Ideas
  • Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri believes India will be a global leader in hydrogen energy production and exports through initiatives like hydrogen blending and green hydrogen production.
  • India's energy demand is rapidly increasing, with projections indicating a rise to 7 million barrels by 2030. The country aims to excel in the trilemma of availability, affordability, and sustainability.
  • Despite being a major crude oil consumer, India's exploration sector remains largely untapped. Efforts are underway to explore the substantial reserves within the sedimentary basins, with plans to expand exploration acreage.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, expressed confidence in India's potential to lead global hydrogen energy production and exports. At the 6th South Asian Geoscience Conference and Exhibition in Greater Noida, Puri highlighted key initiatives such as hydrogen blending in natural gas pipelines, localization of electrolyzer-based technologies, and promoting bio-pathways for green hydrogen production. He emphasized India's trajectory towards becoming a global hub for green hydrogen, positioning it as a fuel for the future. The minister underscored India's surging energy demand, reaching 5.4 million barrels per day and projected to hit 7 million barrels by 2030. India's commitment to balancing availability, affordability, and sustainability in the energy sector was reiterated. Puri also noted the untapped potential in India's exploration sector, with vast recoverable crude oil and natural gas reserves in sedimentary basins. Efforts are underway to boost exploration activities and expand exploration acreage. Looking ahead, Puri anticipates new ideas and an energy revolution in India, fostering energy security and meeting future challenges. With optimism in the geoscientific community, Puri believes in the capacity for innovation to drive India's energy transformation.
