Key Ideas
  • Indian Oil has provided a green hydrogen fuel cell bus to the Indian Navy for trials and performance testing as part of the government's green initiative.
  • The collaboration aims to pioneer the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility, focusing on evaluating performance in challenging climatic conditions.
  • Indian Oil is currently operating 15 fuel cell buses in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, accumulating 300,000 kilometres to promote hydrogen and fuel cell technology for public fleet utilization.
  • The project will also assess the impact of local fuel and air quality on the performance of fuel-cell systems and vehicles, with a focus on efficiency, longevity, and operational reliability.
Indian Oil has recently handed over a state-of-the-art green hydrogen fuel cell bus to the Indian Navy for trials and performance testing as part of a green initiative. The event, held in New Delhi at the Nau Sena Bhavan, saw the signing of an MoU between Indian Oil and the Indian Navy to lead the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility. The Indian Navy chief, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, and Indian Oil Chairman S.M. Vaidya were present alongside senior officials during the event. Both the Navy chief and Indian Oil Chairman expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the importance of environment-friendly transportation and innovative solutions for future needs. The initiative will evaluate the performance of fuel-cell electric buses in the challenging climatic conditions of the Delhi NCR region, focusing on the impact of local fuel and air quality on fuel-cell systems and vehicles. Indian Oil is already operating 15 fuel cell buses in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat, with a cumulative mileage of 300,000 kilometres. Each bus is expected to cover at least 20,000 km, aiming to promote hydrogen and fuel cell technology for heavy-duty e-mobility. This effort positions the Indian Navy as a pioneer in assessing this technology in collaboration with Indian Oil, a leading energy company in India.
