Indian Oil Corporation (IoCL) has received five bids to set up a 10,000-tonne-per-annum green hydrogen plant at its Panipat refinery, making it the largest plant in India to produce green hydrogen, a climate-friendly fuel alternative. This initiative aims to cater to sectors such as refineries, steel plants, and heavy-duty logistics, which find it challenging to reduce their carbon footprint. IoCL's Chairman expressed confidence in awarding the contracts within a month, signaling progress in the green hydrogen project. IoCL, being India's largest hydrogen consumer, holds the advantage of consuming the green hydrogen produced at the plant, contributing to a sustainable energy cycle. The plant will operate on a build-own-operate basis, targeting the elimination of impurities and increasing refined product yields in refineries. Despite facing challenges with previous tenders, IoCL is optimistic about the current tender, which has attracted positive responses and is expected to support the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem in India. Through the establishment of this plant, IoCL plans to address a significant portion of the country's hydrogen consumption, with a focus on expanding the usage of green hydrogen in various sectors, thereby promoting environmental sustainability and industrial growth.
