Indian Railways is embarking on a groundbreaking project to introduce India's first hydrogen train, aiming to make significant strides in green transportation. The Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, disclosed this innovative endeavor in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the development of a state-of-the-art hydrogen train on a pilot basis. This project involves retrofitting a hydrogen fuel cell onto a diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) rake, with design specifications crafted by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO). The upcoming hydrogen train is anticipated to rank among the world's longest and most powerful hydrogen trains. In addition to the train's development, a comprehensive infrastructure plan is in place to facilitate hydrogen refilling, production, storage, and dispensation, ensuring safety measures are met with approvals from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). This holistic approach underscores Indian Railways' commitment to embracing alternative energy solutions for train travel, underscoring the organization's dedication to fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly future within the transportation sector.
