India is making significant strides towards green shipping and decarbonization with a commitment of $25 million to develop hydrogen hubs at Deendayal, Paradip, and V.O. Chidambaranar ports. These hubs will provide bunkering and refuelling facilities for green hydrogen-powered vessels, marking a crucial step in reducing carbon emissions in the maritime sector. Additionally, the country is investing $14 million in pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to convert existing vessels to run on green hydrogen or derivatives. The Shipping Corporation of India is leading the way by converting two vessels to operate on green methanol. The NGHM, with a substantial budget of $2.4 billion, aims to achieve 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production annually by 2030, with investments exceeding $100 billion and creating over 6 lakh jobs. India's renewable energy sector is also flourishing, with a 175% increase in capacity since 2014, surpassing 208 GW. Solar capacity, in particular, has grown exponentially, positioning India as a global leader in clean energy. Minister Joshi emphasized India's commitment to innovative technologies and infrastructure investments, solidifying its role in the global energy transition. With plans to modernize shipyards and revive older dockyards, India aims to be a prominent force in green shipbuilding, targeting a top-five position by 2047.
