India's Green Steel Initiative: Ministry of Steel Joins National Green Hydrogen Mission
Key Ideas
- Ministry of Steel is actively participating in the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with two pilot projects for DRI production using 100% Hydrogen and one project to reduce coal consumption in Blast Furnace.
- Government is supporting the use of Green Hydrogen in the steel sector through various initiatives like releasing a roadmap report, promoting steel scrap recycling, and incentivizing energy efficiency.
- The aim is to decarbonize the steel sector by utilizing green energy sources like hydrogen and solar power, aligning with the broader goal of reducing emissions and promoting sustainable practices.
- Union Minister for Steel highlighted these efforts in the Lok Sabha, emphasizing the importance of transitioning towards green steel production for a more environmentally friendly future.
The Ministry of Steel in India has joined the National Green Hydrogen Mission, a move towards producing green hydrogen and promoting its usage in the steel sector. The Ministry has awarded pilot projects to produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) using 100% hydrogen and to reduce coal consumption in Blast Furnace by incorporating hydrogen. These projects aim to explore the feasibility and benefits of green hydrogen in steel production. The government has acknowledged that current hydrogen-based steel production technologies are not commercially viable and is thus supporting pilot projects to assess its potential.
In addition to hydrogen initiatives, the Ministry of Steel has released a comprehensive report titled 'Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan' in line with recommendations from Task Forces. The report discusses pathways for decarbonizing the steel sector and outlines strategies for a sustainable future. Furthermore, the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy and initiatives like the National Solar Mission and Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme are being leveraged to reduce emissions, enhance scrap availability, promote solar energy, and improve energy efficiency in the steel industry.
Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, highlighted these efforts in the Lok Sabha, emphasizing the importance of transitioning towards green steel production. The overall goal is to reduce carbon emissions, promote sustainability, and drive the steel sector towards a greener and more environmentally friendly direction.
