India's National Green Hydrogen Mission Boosts Transportation Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Government of India initiates five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to explore hydrogen use in buses and trucks.
  • Projects involve 37 vehicles, including hydrogen fuel cell-based and hydrogen internal combustion engine-based vehicles, and 9 hydrogen refuelling stations across 10 routes.
  • Major companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, Ashok Leyland, BPCL, and IOCL awarded projects with a financial support of ₹208 crores from the government.
  • Primary goal is to develop viable hydrogen technologies for transport, reduce fossil fuel dependency, and position India as a leader in clean energy, aligning with India's self-reliant clean energy ambition by 2047.
The Government of India has launched five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to pioneer the use of hydrogen in buses and trucks in the transportation sector. These projects, sanctioned after careful review, involve 37 vehicles, including both hydrogen fuel cell-based and hydrogen internal combustion engine-based vehicles, alongside 9 hydrogen refuelling stations. Vehicles will operate on 10 different routes, supported by major companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, Ashok Leyland, BPCL, and IOCL with a financial backing of ₹208 crores from the government. The aim of these projects is to develop commercially viable hydrogen technologies for transportation, demonstrate the safety and efficiency of hydrogen-powered vehicles, evaluate their performance, and assess their economic feasibility under real-world conditions. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, part of India's strategy to decarbonize its economy and lessen fossil fuel reliance, has a substantial budget of ₹19,744 crore until FY 2029-30. The ultimate goal is to make India a frontrunner in the global clean energy transition, aligning with the country's ambition to achieve self-reliance through clean energy by 2047.
