Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy is set to launch 'PLI scheme 1.1' for the steel industry in New Delhi, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing. The scheme, which was initially conceived during the global lockdowns of 2020, has seen an investment commitment of Rs 27,106 crore and the generation of 14,760 direct employment opportunities. The steel production has shown growth, with an increase of 4.8% in November 2024 over the previous year. Additionally, the Ministry of Steel is preparing the 'Green Steel Mission' with a budget of Rs 15000 Crore to help the industry reduce carbon emissions and work towards the Net Zero target. The mission includes a PLI Scheme for Green Steel, incentives for renewable energy use, and mandates for government agencies to purchase Green Steel. Furthermore, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, led by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, aims to integrate the steel sector into the production and utilization of green hydrogen, aiding in decarbonizing steel production. A Taxonomy for Green Steel was released on December 12, 2024, providing standards for defining and categorizing low-emission steel, facilitating the industry's green transition by creating a market for green steel and seeking financial support.
