Innio Group Launches Europe's First Green Hydrogen CHP Plant in Austria
Key Ideas
  • Innio Group inaugurated a 1 MW hydrogen CHP plant in Gampern, Austria, supporting RAG Austria AG at the onset of the 2024-25 heating season.
  • The Jenbacher CHP plant, powered by green hydrogen from an underground storage facility, provides green electricity and heat to the industrial site.
  • The project aims to showcase the feasibility of decarbonizing communities and industries, demonstrating the potential for replacing natural gas with hydrogen for emission-free power generation.
  • By enabling the seasonal storage of surplus solar power, this initiative is a crucial step towards achieving net-zero emissions and ensuring a sustainable energy supply year-round.
Innio Group has introduced Europe's pioneering 1 MW-class hydrogen combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Gampern, Austria, which is facilitating RAG Austria AG as the 2024-25 heating season commences. This project, a first of its kind in Europe, was commissioned in June 2024 at RAG Austria's facility in Gampern. The innovative solution supplies the industrial site with green electricity and heat, highlighting a significant move towards sustainability and clean energy. The Jenbacher CHP plant operates on green hydrogen, produced during summer via water electrolysis and stored in an underground hydrogen storage facility in Rubensdorf near Gampern. This storage site has the capacity to hold up to 4.2 GWh of surplus solar energy in the form of hydrogen, enabling efficient utilization. Andreas Kunz, CTO at Innio, emphasizes that this hydrogen energy solution supports RAG Austria in reshaping the energy value chain, demonstrating the feasibility of decarbonizing communities and industrial sites. The collaboration between Innio and RAG Austria represents a crucial advancement towards achieving net-zero emissions and tackling the challenge of seasonal storage of solar power for winter usage. The Jenbacher plant in Gampern serves as a pivotal showcase project for the gradual replacement of natural gas with hydrogen, paving the way for emission-free power generation throughout the year. Markus Mitteregger, CEO at RAG Austria, underlines the importance of Jenbacher technology in enabling the separation of renewable energy generation from consumption, ensuring a sustainable and secure energy supply all year round.
