Masdar, the UAE's clean energy leader, has partnered with TotalEnergies to evaluate the feasibility of a commercial green hydrogen to methanol to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project in Abu Dhabi. This initiative targets the decarbonization of challenging sectors like aviation and maritime by utilizing green methanol and SAF produced from CO2 capture and renewable energy-based green hydrogen. The recent agreement builds on a successful test flight conducted during COP28, demonstrating the potential of methanol to SAF conversion. Masdar's focus on the aviation industry is evident through strategic partnerships to advance the SAF sector. The project aligns with Abu Dhabi's Low Carbon Hydrogen Policy and the UAE National Hydrogen Strategy, aiming to establish the UAE as a major global producer of low carbon hydrogen by 2031. Masdar's commitment to sustainability is showcased by its goal to expand renewable energy capacity to 100GW and become a leading green hydrogen producer by 2030.
