Paterna-based Matteco, a Spanish advanced materials company, has successfully secured €15M in a Series A funding round with support from national and international family offices. The investment is aimed at aiding the company in developing solutions that promote decarbonisation and enhance renewable hydrogen competitiveness. Matteco plans to utilize the funds to establish a next-generation catalyst and electrode factory in Paterna, Valencia, with the capacity to produce up to 1 GW of electrodes annually. Led by CEO Iker Marcaide, Matteco is focused on meeting the increasing global demand for its advanced catalysts and electrodes, catering to customers across Europe, North America, and Asia. The company also intends to expand its workforce from 30 to 100 employees by 2025 to support production scaling and boost innovation in clean technology. Matteco's co-founder and CEO, Iker Marcaide, expressed excitement for the company's growth phase, emphasizing the importance of partnering with impact-driven investors to leverage materials innovation in addressing environmental challenges. The company's co-founder and CTO, Gonzalo Abellán, highlighted the significant impact of their patented technology on green hydrogen production competitiveness. Matteco, a spin-off from the University of Valencia and part of Zubi Labs, is dedicated to decarbonising the economy through green hydrogen production. Their platinum-free materials are claimed to enhance electrolyser performance by reducing energy consumption, increasing current density, and offering greater stability and durability. These advancements contribute to making green hydrogen production more efficient and competitive with fossil fuels by lowering operational and equipment costs.
