Mexico's state-owned Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is exploring a partnership with Pemex to develop a green hydrogen project for sustainable energy production. The aim is to create synergies between the two state-owned companies, leveraging Pemex's significant usage of hydrogen. Iris Cureño, head of the CFE's priority projects division, highlighted Pemex's Salina Cruz Refinery in Oaxaca as a potential site for green hydrogen production. While acknowledging the high costs associated with green hydrogen, Cureño emphasized the importance of producing and utilizing it locally. The Mexican government, under incoming Pemex CEO Víctor Rodríguez Padilla, is focusing on renewable energy development and potential joint ventures with CFE. However, challenges such as the lack of specific regulations and high production costs remain. To address these issues, CFE is collaborating with academics to develop local green hydrogen technology to reduce reliance on expensive imports. President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum's commitment to renewable energy aligns with the push towards green hydrogen production in Mexico. If the plan to produce green hydrogen at Pemex's Salina Cruz Refinery materializes, it could elevate the Isthmus of Tehuantepec as a significant green hydrogen hub. This initiative aligns with Mexico's sustainable energy goals and signifies a shift towards cleaner energy sources in the country.
