Miraka, a Māori-owned dairy company based in Taupō, New Zealand, has unveiled the country's first green hydrogen dual-fuel milk collection tanker in line with its sustainability objectives. The introduction of this tanker is expected to bring about a significant reduction in CO2 emissions associated with milk collection transport, furthering Miraka's goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the dairy industry. The dairy plant already boasts one of the world's lowest manufacturing carbon emissions footprints, emitting 92% less CO2 than traditional coal-fired factories. The launch ceremony, attended by Agriculture Minister Todd McClay, symbolized a key moment for Miraka's commitment to environmental care and support for the nation's transition to a low-carbon future. The green hydrogen dual-fuel tanker, capable of covering 165,000km annually and reducing milk collection CO2 emissions by approximately 35% per vehicle, represents a step towards sustainable heavy freight transportation. Through partnerships with suppliers like Central Transport and Halcyon Power, Miraka aims to expand its green hydrogen initiatives nationwide, supported by Tūaropaki Trust's geothermal energy provision from the Mokai Power Station. The collaboration with Japan's Obayashi Corporation in establishing Halcyon Power, New Zealand's first commercial-scale green hydrogen plant, underscores the commitment to a sustainable circular economy and low-emission practices. The trust's investment in geothermal energy and green hydrogen production highlights a collective effort towards environmental stewardship and a prosperous future for generations to come.
