Miraka, a Taupo-based milk processor, has unveiled New Zealand's first green hydrogen dual-fuel milk collection tanker in a move to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions during milk transport. The company, already utilizing renewable geothermal energy, strives for sustainability and has achieved one of the world's lowest manufacturing carbon emissions footprints. The launch ceremony was attended by Agriculture Minister Todd McClay, marking a milestone achievement for Miraka. The introduction of the green hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel tanker aligns with the company's commitment to environmental care and supporting a low-carbon future in New Zealand. Miraka's chair, Bruce Scott, and chief executive, Karl Gradon, expressed their enthusiasm for the new technology, emphasizing the environmental benefits and the reduction in CO2 emissions through the use of green hydrogen. The partnership with Tūaropaki Trust and Halcyon Power, which provides the green hydrogen for the tanker, showcases a joint effort towards environmental sustainability and a transition to a circular economy. Central Transport Ltd, Miraka's transport partner, also plays a crucial role in this initiative, highlighting the collaborative approach to innovation and reducing carbon footprint. The green hydrogen dual-fuel tanker is set to cover 165,000 kilometers annually, with the capacity to haul 58 metric tonnes and requiring two hydrogen refills daily. The initiative symbolizes Miraka's dedication to sustainable practices and reflects a positive step towards a greener future in milk collection and transport in New Zealand.
