Namibia's Green Hydrogen Revolution: HyIron Pioneering Carbon-Neutral Iron Production
Key Ideas
  • HyIron Namibia has successfully produced the country's first green industrial combustible gas through an innovative process using green hydrogen.
  • The company aims to scale up its production to 215kg of green hydrogen per hour, contributing to carbon-neutral iron production and economic competitiveness.
  • The project has signed an off-take agreement with a German automotive technology company for the supply of up to 200,000 tonnes of Direct Reduced Iron annually, marking a significant milestone.
  • Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe emphasizes the project's positive impact on Namibia's economy and its role in the global green energy transition.
Namibia is making strides in the green hydrogen sector with HyIron Namibia leading the way in producing the country's first green industrial combustible gas. The company, established through collaboration between Namibian and German companies, uses green hydrogen to reduce iron ore in a carbon-neutral process, aiming to scale up production for green iron. The green hydrogen is produced via the electrolysis of water using electricity generated by a 25 MW PV Plant. HyIron's Oshivela plant, powered entirely by solar energy, is set to produce green hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) with an initial output of 15,000 tonnes per year, expected to ramp up to two million tonnes annually by 2030. The project's innovative approach has attracted a long-term off-take agreement with a German automotive technology company, Benteler, for the supply of up to 200,000 tonnes of DRI annually. This agreement signifies a significant step towards sustainable iron production and economic development. Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe commends the project for its innovative financing strategies and the positive impact it brings to Namibia's economy, positioning the nation as a key player in the global green energy transition.
