NETRA's Groundbreaking Green Hydrogen Production Plant in New Delhi
Key Ideas
- NETRA, the R&D arm of NTPC Ltd., is establishing a unique green hydrogen production plant in New Delhi using Plasma Oxy Gasification technology.
- The plant will produce 1 tonne per day of green hydrogen from 25 tonnes per day of MSW/Agri-Waste, separating high purity hydrogen (>99.9%) using advanced gas membrane and pressure swing adsorption.
- The technology not only produces green hydrogen but also generates electricity from carbon monoxide separated during the hydrogen recovery process, promoting a circular economy model.
- This initiative aligns with NETRA's and NTPC's commitment to research and demonstrate technologies for energy transition and sustainability, marking a significant milestone in green energy production.
NETRA, the research and development wing of NTPC Ltd., is venturing into establishing a pioneering green hydrogen production plant in New Delhi. This plant will utilize the innovative Plasma Oxy Gasification technology to convert Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and Agri-Waste into green hydrogen, making it a unique project globally. The process involves plasma-assisted 'oxy gasification' of MSW-RDF/Agri-Waste to produce high-quality syn-gas, from which high purity hydrogen will be extracted (>99.9%) through a novel gas membrane and pressure swing adsorption configuration.
The demonstration plant is projected to produce 1 tonne of green hydrogen per day by gasifying approximately 25 tonnes of MSW/Agri-Waste. Additionally, the Carbon-Mono-Oxide separated during the hydrogen recovery process will be utilized to generate electricity using a low-calorie gas engine, contributing to the circular economy concept.
This cutting-edge technology not only offers an efficient pathway for green hydrogen production but also signifies NETRA's dedication to researching and showcasing technologies that facilitate energy transition. Furthermore, the establishment of this plant reflects NTPC's commitment to embracing circular economy models, emphasizing sustainability and renewable energy initiatives.
This groundbreaking endeavor introduces a new chapter for NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC, in the realm of green hydrogen production. By embracing innovative solutions and sustainable practices, this project sets a significant precedent in the journey towards cleaner energy and environmental responsibility.
