Norwegian Hydrogen Partners with GreenIron for Green Hydrogen Supply in Sweden
Key Ideas
  • Norwegian Hydrogen to supply green hydrogen to GreenIron in Sweden for a fossil-free green metals plant in Sandviken.
  • GreenIron's plant will use hydrogen as a reducing agent to produce direct reduced iron (DRI) for steel production.
  • The collaboration aims to support the reduction of emissions and secure the supply chain for GreenIron's commercial production.
  • Norwegian Hydrogen plans to scale up hydrogen production to meet the increasing demands from GreenIron as production volumes grow.
Norwegian Hydrogen has entered an agreement to supply green hydrogen to GreenIron, a green iron producer in Sandviken, Sweden. GreenIron will utilize green hydrogen as a reducing agent in its fossil-free green metals plant, set to start producing iron by the end of 2024. The hydrogen will be provided by Norwegian Hydrogen's electrolyser plant in Hellesylt, located approximately 800km away. The Hellesylt plant currently produces 1.3 tonnes of hydrogen per day from a 3MW electrolyser, initially focusing on maritime and land transport. This partnership aligns with Norwegian Hydrogen's strategy to lead green hydrogen supply and support industry partners in emissions reduction. GreenIron's Sandviken plant will leverage hydrogen gas to react with oxygen in iron ore, generating direct reduced iron (DRI) that can be further processed into steel. With plans to produce 28,000 tonnes of DRI annually, the plant has already obtained environmental permits. The collaboration ensures a stable supply chain as GreenIron gears up for commercial production and expansion. Norwegian Hydrogen anticipates the need for additional hydrogen production capacity as GreenIron's volumes increase during 2025. Both companies are committed to advancing sustainable steel production and reducing emissions in the industry.
