The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India has given the green light to five pilot projects that will see the introduction of green hydrogen buses on various routes across the country, including the picturesque Bhubaneswar-Konark-Puri stretch in Odisha. These projects, part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, involve the deployment of a total of 37 vehicles, comprising buses and trucks, along with nine hydrogen refuelling stations on different routes. The vehicles will include 15 hydrogen fuel cell-run and 22 hydrogen internal combustion engine-based vehicles. Apart from Odisha, other routes like Greater Noida-Delhi-Agra, Pune-Mumbai, and Thiruvananthapuram-Kochi are also set to witness the trial of hydrogen-powered transport. Major companies such as TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC have been entrusted with the projects, with an overall financial support of about Rs 208 crore to drive the advancement of hydrogen technology in the country. Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) will spearhead the implementation of the project in Odisha, investing Rs 19.5 crore to assist in the shift from conventional fossil fuel-based buses to environmentally friendly hydrogen-powered ones. Through this initiative, MNRE aims to evaluate the technical feasibility, performance, and economic viability of hydrogen-based vehicles and refuelling stations under practical conditions, with the ultimate goal of decreasing India's reliance on fossil fuel imports.
