Salzgitter Group, a steelmaker based in Germany, is taking significant steps towards sustainable steel production by embarking on a tender process to acquire hydrogen for its green steel plant. This initiative is part of the company's ambitious SALCOS® program, which focuses on low-carbon steelmaking. The plan involves utilizing up to 150,000 metric tons of hydrogen annually, with a substantial portion of 9,000 metric tons expected to be sourced from Salzgitter's own 100 MW electrolysis plant on-site starting from 2026. Additionally, the company is exploring third-party hydrogen procurement options set to commence in 2027, subject to the establishment of hydrogen supply routes facilitated by German state funding. The European Commission has recently given the green light to approximately €3 billion in state support to aid in the development of a hydrogen core network and a specialized pipeline within Germany. This significant funding injection underscores the commitment towards advancing sustainable and eco-friendly practices in industries like steel production, paving the way for a greener future in the European Union.
