The Scottish Government is investing £3.1 million to support the development of a green hydrogen hub in Speyside, benefiting the whisky industry and the local economy. The hub, led by Storegga, is expected to create around 100 high skilled and high-value jobs in the region. By 2032, the hub aims to produce 200MW of green hydrogen annually, which can heat over 8,000 homes and save 190,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, significantly reducing emissions in the Scottish whisky sector. Green hydrogen, produced through renewable energy, will be used to fuel transportation, provide commercial and industrial heat, and support the decarbonisation of various industrial sites, including whisky distillers. The funding from the Scottish Government will be matched by Storegga, totaling £6.2 million, with additional support from the Hydrogen Innovation Scheme. Acting Energy Secretary Gillian Martin highlighted the importance of clean energy for the whisky industry's decarbonisation and emphasized the role of green hydrogen in Scotland's transition to net zero. Storegga CEO Tim Stedman expressed gratitude for the government's support and emphasized the collaborative effort between government and industry to achieve sustainable practices. The project not only aims to reduce carbon emissions but also to engage with the local community through public consultations, ensuring that the benefits of the hub extend to the residents. By harnessing Scotland's renewable energy resources, the initiative promotes sustainable industrial practices and creates long-term job opportunities, aligning with the country's transition to a greener economy.
