Sembcorp Green Hydrogen has entered into a partnership with Japanese shipping company NYK Line to transport 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen-based ammonia from India to Japan. This initiative is part of a broader agreement involving Sojitz and Kyushu Electric Power to supply the volumes to industrial off-takers in Japan's Kyushu region. The development of Sembcorp's green ammonia plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, has commenced with a focus on leveraging the company's renewable energy portfolio to produce cost-effective green ammonia in India. The collaboration, which began with a Memorandum of Understanding in December, aims to explore green ammonia production opportunities in India and facilitate exports to Japan. Vipul Tuli, Chairman for South Asia and CEO of Sembcorp Industries, emphasized Tamil Nadu's leading role in India's green hydrogen agenda. Tan Soon Kim, Deputy Managing Director of Enterprise Singapore, highlighted the significance of Singaporean expertise in supporting India's economic growth. The project's alignment with Japan's Hydrogen Society Promotion Act, offering a 15-year subsidy for low-carbon hydrogen, reflects a strategic move towards decarbonization. The Hydrogen Council's projections suggest Japan's transition from LNG and coal to hydrogen and derived fuels, including ammonia, to achieve sustainable energy goals.
