Siemens Mobility has embarked on the production of hydrogen-powered trains designated to operate on the Südostabyernbahn network in Bavaria, Germany. These trains, known as the Mireo Plus H, are scheduled to be in service from 2026 onwards, connecting eight stations along the Mühldorf – Tüßling – Burghausen route covering a distance of 32.2km. Equipped with a roof-mounted fuel cell and lithium-ion batteries, the trains promise zero-emission operations. With a drive power of 1.7MW, the Mireo Plus H is capable of reaching a top speed of 140km/h.
The procurement of these hydrogen trains by the State of Bavaria marks a transition from diesel-dependent trains currently operating from the Mühldorf hub. Additionally, Deutsche Bahn (DB) is gearing up to construct an electrolysis plant in Mühldorf, with a focus on utilizing green electricity for its operations.
Cornelia Würtz, Managing Director of DB RegioNetz Verkehrs, emphasized the significance of hydrogen trains in DB's pursuit of climate neutrality. This initiative aligns with the broader push towards sustainable transportation solutions and underscores the commitment to leveraging innovative technologies for a greener future.
