Key Ideas
  • Construction has commenced on Spain's largest green hydrogen plant, a collaboration between bp and Iberdrola in Castellón.
  • The 25 MW facility aims to significantly reduce industrial emissions, provide 500 jobs, and supply clean hydrogen to key industries.
  • By 2026, the plant is expected to produce 2,800 tons of green hydrogen annually, cutting 23,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
  • The project, with a total investment of €70 million and €15 million in EU funding, is a crucial step in Spain's hydrogen transition.
Construction has officially begun on Spain's largest green hydrogen plant, situated in Castellón, as a joint venture between bp and Iberdrola. This 25 MW facility is set to revolutionize the region by significantly reducing industrial emissions, creating 500 job opportunities, and supplying clean hydrogen to key industries. The initial phase involves preparing a 20,000 m² plot near bp's Castellón refinery, followed by the installation of advanced electrolysers to produce hydrogen using renewable electricity. Once operational in 2026, the plant is projected to generate approximately 2,800 tons of green hydrogen annually, replacing traditional grey hydrogen derived from natural gas. This shift is expected to prevent around 23,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, equivalent to removing 5,000 cars from the road. Jorge Palomar Herrero, Director of Hydrogen Development at Iberdrola, highlighted the local impact of the project, emphasizing the development of a hydrogen value chain in Spain and the creation of opportunities for more than 25 local companies. With a total investment of €70 million, including €15 million in EU funding, this initiative marks a significant advancement in Spain's transition towards hydrogen as a clean energy source.
