The European Commission, together with the European Investment Bank (EIB), KfW Development Bank, Corporación de Fomento de la Producción (CORFO), and the Chilean Ministry of Energy, has established the Team Europe Renewable Hydrogen Funding Platform for Chile in Santiago de Chile. This initiative aims to support Chile's renewable hydrogen industry and help the country achieve its goal of 100% clean energy by 2050.
The platform, part of the European Union - Latin America and the Caribbean Global Gateway Investment Agenda, will provide financing of up to €200 million to Chile, with additional grant support of €16.5 million from the EU Latin America and Caribbean Investment Facility (LACIF). This funding will be channeled through CORFO to drive renewable hydrogen initiatives in Chile.
The agreement is seen as a significant step towards decarbonizing Chile's economy, creating green jobs, and fostering business opportunities for both Chilean and European companies. It is estimated that this operation will lead to the development of 150 MW of new renewable energy generation capacity and 150 MW of new electrolysers capacity in Chile.
Key stakeholders, including European Commissioner Jozef Sikela and Chilean Minister of Energy Diego Pardow, expressed their support and optimism regarding the platform's potential to advance the renewable hydrogen industry. The European partners highlighted their commitment to sustainability, green job creation, and economic ties with Chile.
The initiative is aligned with Chile's ambitious climate action goals and reflects a shared vision for a cleaner, more sustainable future between Team Europe and Chile. The funding platform is part of the larger Global Gateway Investment Agenda, where the European Union aims to mobilize substantial investments for sustainable projects worldwide across various sectors to benefit partner countries and local communities.
