The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) and Administração dos Portos de Sines e do Algarve, SA (APS) have entered into a strategic partnership to strengthen the development of sustainable, green, and digital logistics corridors. This agreement, rooted in the historic and economic connections between Namibia and Portugal, aims to enhance connectivity, trade, and investment between the two countries. The focus lies on establishing an Atlantic hub and logistics corridor to facilitate the movement of goods between Namibia and Portugal. The collaboration will span five years and concentrate on identifying synergies in port development, logistics, and trade facilitation. Both Namport and APS will work towards improving port efficiency, digitalization, and environmental sustainability in line with the European Commission's Global Gateway initiative. This initiative aims to allocate a significant investment for smart, clean, and secure infrastructure in the energy, transport, and digital sectors. The partnership highlights the strategic positioning of the Port of Sines as a key European logistics hub, leveraging its location and natural advantages. Namibia plans to capitalize on its renewable energy resources and raw materials to become a leader in global green hydrogen production. The Ports of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz are expected to support this transition by exporting critical raw materials, synthetic fuels, and green hydrogen. While the Port of Walvis Bay serves as a pivotal gateway for trade between southern Africa and international markets, specializing in various cargo types, the Port of Lüderitz focuses on zinc, lead, and fish exports while also gearing up to support Namibia's green hydrogen industry. APS, managing several ports in Portugal, including the Port of Sines, plays a crucial role in European trade and transshipment activities. The collaboration between Namport and APS is anticipated to bring mutual benefits through increased trade, technological advancements, and sustainable port operations. This partnership aims to elevate both Namibia and Portugal as significant players in the global logistics and trade landscape.
