TotalEnergies and Air Products Sign Long-Term Green Hydrogen Supply Agreement in Europe
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and Air Products agree on a 15-year deal for the supply of 70,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to TotalEnergies' Northern European refineries starting in 2030.
  • The agreement aligns with TotalEnergies' goal to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from its oil and gas operations by 2030.
  • In addition to the hydrogen supply deal, the companies plan to collaborate on renewable power supply, starting with a 150 MW solar project in Texas, with future opportunities in the UK, Poland, and France.
  • Top executives from both companies express optimism about the demand for clean hydrogen and its pivotal role in decarbonizing heavy industries and other sectors.
French energy giant TotalEnergies and U.S.-based Air Products have officially inked a 15-year agreement for the supply of 70,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, commencing in 2030. Air Products will be delivering this green hydrogen to TotalEnergies' Northern European refineries. The deal marks the initial stride towards TotalEnergies' ambitious target of slashing net greenhouse gas emissions from its oil and gas activities by 40% before 2030, in comparison to 2015 levels. Notably, TotalEnergies had previously invited bids for the provision of 500,000 tons annually of green hydrogen to decarbonize its array of European refineries. These refineries, based in countries like Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and France, are significant consumers of hydrogen. In parallel, both companies have also outlined a memorandum of understanding for supplying renewable power, with an initial power purchase agreement set for 150 MW generated from a solar initiative in Texas. The collaboration further intends to explore additional opportunities for power purchase agreements in the UK, Poland, and France. Top leaders from TotalEnergies and Air Products shared their positive outlook on the agreement, underscoring the critical role clean hydrogen is poised to play in the decarbonization journey of extensive industries and sectors.
