The French company HDF Energy has taken a significant step towards a major green hydrogen production project in Tunisia with an initial investment of around €3 billion. This move aims to cater to both the European market and local needs. Signing a key memorandum of understanding, HDF Energy and Tunisia's Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy have set the stage for an ambitious project involving 1 GW of wind energy, 500 MW of photovoltaic energy, and 800 MW of electrolysers capable of producing up to 65,000 tonnes of green hydrogen. This hydrogen will largely be exported to Europe through the SoutH2 corridor initiative. The partnership symbolizes Tunisia's determination to excel in green hydrogen production, utilizing its abundant solar and wind energy resources. By collaborating with various international entities like TUNUR, AKER Horizons, Verbund, and others, Tunisia is strategically positioning itself to produce 8.3 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2050, with a significant portion earmarked for export. This aligns with the country's national strategy to establish itself as a major player in the green hydrogen market. The investment estimates for this endeavor total around 120 billion euros, signaling Tunisia's strong commitment to sustainability and energy transition.
