Scientists at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman, have conducted a study on the potential for green hydrogen development in the unexplored northwest region of the country. The research identified five key locations with promising potential for green hydrogen investment: Bahla, Fahud, Ibri, Jibal, and Sunaynah. The study, supported by local energy firm Daleel Petroleum, assessed renewable potential, land availability, and proximity to demand centers in these areas. The levelised cost of hydrogen (LCOH) was benchmarked against international recommendations, and various energy systems were evaluated. Findings indicated differences in wind and solar energy potential across locations, with Bahla requiring a larger wind farm. The research aims to boost Oman's green hydrogen sector, aligning with the country's sustainability goals and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Overall, the study is expected to support Oman's energy transition targets and green investment opportunities, contributing to the country's vision for a sustainable future.
