Ballard Power Systems Signs Supply Agreement for Zero-Emission Trains in California
Key Ideas
  • Ballard Power Systems to supply eight megawatts of fuel cell engines to power Stadler's zero-emission passenger trains for Caltrans.
  • Order supports Caltrans' purchase of 10 FLIRT H2 trains with an option for an additional 19 trains, enhancing zero-emission rail capabilities in California.
  • Partnership between Ballard and Stadler aims to decarbonize commuter rail transportation and provide emission-free passenger transport solutions.
  • Fuel cells offer a zero-emission alternative to diesel engines, providing comparable payload, range, reliability, and refueling times.
Ballard Power Systems has entered into a multi-year supply agreement with Stadler US to provide eight megawatts of FCmove®-HD+ fuel cell engines for powering trains for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). These engines will be integrated into Stadler's zero-emission passenger trains, specifically the FLIRT H2 model. The collaboration between Ballard and Stadler, which has spanned over three years, has successfully demonstrated the integration of Ballard fuel cell engines into the FLIRT H2, making it the first hydrogen fuel cell powered passenger train compliant with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations in the United States. The order from Stadler supports Caltrans' initiative to acquire 10 FLIRT H2 trains initially, with a potential extension for 19 more trains, thereby bolstering California's zero-emission passenger rail capabilities. CEO of Ballard, Randy MacEwen, expressed excitement about the partnership and highlighted the environmental benefits of fuel cells in replacing diesel engines for passenger rail transport. Stadler's CEO, Martin Ritter, also emphasized the importance of the FLIRT H2 train in providing emission-free transport solutions without the need for costly electrification infrastructure. This collaboration aims to support California's zero-emission goals and enhance the efficiency and sustainability of commuter rail transportation in the region.
