California Launches Second Round of Transit Set-Aside Lane Funding for Zero-Emission Vehicles
Key Ideas
  • The EnergIIZE project, administered by CALSTART and Tetra Tech, is offering up to $15 million in incentives for zero-emission vehicle charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure in California.
  • Transit Set-Aside Lane covers up to $2.8 million in funding for eligible equipment like compressors, pumps, storage, and dispensers for hydrogen equipment, as well as EV charging equipment.
  • Fleets eligible for the funding must meet specific criteria including being part of the CARB Innovative Clean Transit program or being a California city/county government, Native American Tribe, or a Non-Governmental Organization serving Tribal entities.
  • The initiative aims to promote the adoption of zero-emission vehicles in California by providing financial support to transit fleets and encouraging the expansion of infrastructure for hydrogen and electric vehicles.
The California Energy Commission's EnergIIZE project is launching the second round of Transit Set-Aside Lane funding to promote the adoption of zero-emission vehicles in California. Administered by CALSTART and Tetra Tech, this initiative aims to provide up to $15 million in incentives for the deployment of zero-emission vehicle charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure. The funding covers equipment such as compressors, pumps, storage, and dispensers for hydrogen equipment, as well as EV charging equipment like Level 2 EVSE and DC fast-chargers. The project targets California transit fleets, Tribes, and other eligible entities. The Transit Set-Aside Lane, as part of EnergIIZE, offers funding of up to $2.8 million for eligible equipment to applicants meeting equity criteria. To qualify, fleets must meet specific criteria such as being part of the CARB Innovative Clean Transit program or being a California government entity, Native American Tribe, or NGO serving Tribal entities. Additionally, the initiative works in conjunction with CARB's Clean Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project. The funding application is open through the Incentive Processing Center portal. The Set-Aside Lane operates alongside EnergIIZE's Drayage Set-Aside Lane, which provides infrastructure incentives of up to $50 million for hydrogen and EV drayage charging/fueling infrastructure. CALSTART's deputy director, Tesi Bravo, expressed excitement about reopening this funding opportunity for transit agencies and acknowledged CARB's support. The program aims to encourage California transit fleets to take advantage of these funding opportunities and contribute to the expansion of clean transportation infrastructure.
