Canada's Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has announced a commitment of up to CA$300 million to support clean hydrogen trade with Germany, a significant move in strengthening the Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance. This investment will facilitate access to clean energy from Canadian producers for Germany. In parallel, Nikola, a hydrogen truck manufacturer, opened Ontario's first commercial hydrogen refueling station in collaboration with IT industries. The funds will be distributed through an auction process expected to launch by year-end, subject to European Commission review and a matching commitment from Germany. The Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance, unveiled in August 2022, seeks to enable Canadian companies to enter the German market for clean hydrogen and ammonia within three years, fostering economic growth and job creation. This initiative follows the introduction of the Clean Hydrogen Investment Tax Credit by the Canadian Government in June, reinforcing the country's commitment to sustainable energy. Minister Wilkinson emphasized the benefits of the clean hydrogen trade, highlighting the creation of sustainable jobs for Canadians, enhanced energy security for both nations, and reduced emissions in the transatlantic region. The partnership is expected to pave the way for a thriving transatlantic hydrogen economy, offering vast economic opportunities for Canadians across various regions, including Atlantic Canada.
