China's Milestone: First Hydrogen-Powered Train Aces Trial Run in Changchun
Key Ideas
  • China's debut hydrogen train by CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles achieved a successful full-load trial in Changchun, Jilin Province.
  • The train, featuring a hydrogen power system and domestic energy control technology, hit speeds of 160 km/h with low energy consumption.
  • The test demonstrated the train's endurance in extreme temperatures and highlighted hydrogen's potential as a zero-emission energy source for transportation.
  • The China Hydrogen Alliance foresees significant growth in the nation's hydrogen energy sector, estimating a value of 1 trillion yuan by 2025.
China celebrated a significant milestone as it conducted the full-load trial run of its first hydrogen-powered train in Changchun, Jilin Province. Developed by CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles (CRVC), the train features a cutting-edge hydrogen power system and a domestically engineered hydrogen-electricity energy control system. During the trial, the train operated at a commendable speed of 160 kilometers per hour while maintaining a low energy consumption rate of 5 kilowatt-hours per hour. Impressively, the train is designed to travel over 1,000 kilometers on a single journey. CRVC successfully tested the train's capabilities in challenging weather conditions ranging from -25 to 35 degrees Celsius. This achievement underscores hydrogen's appeal as a clean energy alternative since it only emits water vapor. The China Hydrogen Alliance's optimistic forecast further adds to the anticipation surrounding hydrogen technology, estimating a substantial value of 1 trillion yuan for China's hydrogen energy industry by 2025 and projecting hydrogen energy consumption to surpass 10 percent of the country's total by 2050. This monumental breakthrough paves the way for a greener and more sustainable future in rail transportation.
