DP World Advances Sustainability with Field Testing of Hydrogen-Powered RTG Crane
Key Ideas
  • DP World conducts field testing of a hydrogen fuel cell rubber-tired gantry crane at the Port of Vancouver to reduce carbon emissions.
  • The pilot project involves retrofitting a diesel RTG with a Hydrogen-Electric Generator and monitoring performance metrics in a one-year field trial.
  • Collaboration with TYCROP Manufacturing, H2 Portable, and HTEC showcases advancements in sustainable logistics and decarbonization efforts.
  • If successful, DP World plans to convert its diesel-powered RTG cranes in Vancouver and Prince Rupert to zero-emissions technology.
DP World has completed initial tests of a hydrogen fuel cell rubber-tired gantry (RTG) crane at the Port of Vancouver, as part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions from port operations. The RTG crane is undergoing field testing to evaluate electrifying DP World's global fleet of 1,500 RTG cranes. These cranes, traditionally powered by diesel, are vital for cargo handling but contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. By introducing hydrogen technology, DP World aims to decrease or eliminate this environmental impact. The pilot project, initiated in October 2023, involves retrofitting a diesel RTG with a Hydrogen-Electric Generator (HEG) and conducting a one-year field trial to monitor performance metrics. The collaboration with TYCROP Manufacturing, H2 Portable, and HTEC demonstrates advancements in sustainable logistics. The field trial aims to compare the hydrogen electric RTG with a traditional diesel-powered RTG in terms of productivity, reliability, maintainability, costs, and environmental benefits. If successful, DP World plans to convert its diesel-powered RTG cranes in Vancouver and Prince Rupert to zero-emissions technology. The company is also considering trials of an electric terminal tractor and acquiring a fleet of electric vehicles. The introduction of hydrogen technology in port operations represents a significant step towards achieving sustainable practices and industry-wide change in the logistics sector.
