Green Hydrogen Boost: Sicily's Economic Transition with 1MW Electrolyzer
Key Ideas
- Italian companies Duferco Energia and Ansaldo Green Tech partner to commission a 1 MW electrolyzer for green hydrogen production in Sicily.
- The project, funded by the EU's NextGenerationEU initiative, aims to produce over 500 kg of green hydrogen per day and support the decarbonization of key industrial sectors.
- With a total investment of €10 million, the hydrogen valley project will create new economic opportunities, stimulate local growth, and contribute to the region's energy independence.
- Leaders from both companies highlight the environmental and economic benefits of the project, emphasizing its role in promoting sustainability and driving industrial development.
Italian companies Duferco Energia and Ansaldo Green Tech have entered into a strategic agreement to install a 1 MW electrolyzer in Giammoro, Sicily, as part of the hydrogen valley project. The electrolyzer, utilizing anion exchange membrane (AEM) technology, will be capable of producing over 500 kg of green hydrogen per day with high efficiency. This initiative, funded by the European Union under the NextGenerationEU program, also involves a 4 MW photovoltaic plant to power the electrolyzer, enabling the production of around 100 tons of green hydrogen annually. The project aims to support the decarbonization of industrial sectors such as steelmaking, logistics, and mobility.
The €10 million investment in the hydrogen valley project is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy by creating jobs and stimulating growth in the green hydrogen production and distribution supply chain. Both the CEO of Duferco Energia and Ansaldo Green Tech expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the benefits it will bring in terms of environmental sustainability and economic development. The partnership represents a step towards energy transition and strengthening energy independence in Sicily. The initiative aligns with the European decarbonization strategies outlined in the RePowerEU plan, emphasizing the shift towards renewable energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
