Essar Energy Transition to Build Europe's First Hydrogen-Fuelled Power Plant
Key Ideas
  • Essar Energy Transition plans to build Europe's first 100% hydrogen-fuelled power plant at Stanlow refinery by 2027.
  • The project aims to reduce 740,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually by replacing hydrocarbons with hydrogen in power generation.
  • The investment supports decarbonisation plans, aims to cut emissions by 95% at the refinery by 2030, and contributes to the HyNet industrial cluster.
  • EET's initiative includes developing significant low carbon hydrogen capacity, infrastructure for new energies, and creating high skilled employment in the North West.
Essar Energy Transition, a part of the Essar Group, is embarking on a USD 3.6 billion low carbon project in the UK and India. One of the key milestones is the construction of Europe's first hydrogen-fuelled power plant at the Stanlow refinery in the UK by 2027. This project, named EET Hydrogen Power, aims to become a leading low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK. With a capacity of 125 MW of power and 6,000 tonnes per day of steam, the plant will significantly reduce carbon emissions by replacing hydrocarbons with hydrogen. The investment supports EET Fuels' goal of becoming the lowest carbon process refinery globally and aims to cut emissions by 95% at the refinery by 2030. Furthermore, EET Hydrogen Power is a crucial infrastructure project that aligns with the decarbonisation plans of the HyNet industrial cluster. The initiative not only focuses on reducing emissions but also on creating high skilled employment in the North West. This project is part of Essar Energy Transition's broader commitment to lead the UK's low carbon energy transition and showcase the pathway to decarbonising high emitting industries.
