Hong Kong Urged to Plan for Hydrogen Development Amid Growing Interest
Key Ideas
  • Legislative Council members in Hong Kong are advocating for the planning of hydrogen development despite the current immaturity of hydrogen production.
  • The SAR administration is introducing a new Strategy for Hydrogen Development with safety guidelines for hydrogen refueling facilities and power generation.
  • Approval has been given for 14 hydrogen fuel trial projects, including hydrogen buses, fueling stations, and hydrogen supply facilities in various locations across Hong Kong.
  • While concerns about emissions from 'gray hydrogen' persist, there is a push for the preparation and adoption of zero-emission 'green hydrogen' technology in the future.
Legislative Council members in Hong Kong are encouraging the early planning for hydrogen development, acknowledging the nascent stage of hydrogen production. The SAR administration is unveiling a new Strategy for Hydrogen Development, which includes safety guidelines for hydrogen refueling facilities and power generation. By the end of March, approval in principle was granted for 14 hydrogen fuel trial projects, encompassing initiatives like Citybus' hydrogen buses, fueling stations at West Kowloon depot, and hydrogen supply facilities at the Hong Kong and China Gas plant in Tai Po. Future projects expected this year involve street sweepers, Sinopec Group's first public hydrogen refueling station in Yuen Long, and MTR Corp's hydrogen-powered light rail vehicle. There are concerns raised about the current use of 'gray hydrogen' from fossil fuels, leading to emissions, while the technology for zero-emission 'green hydrogen' is still in development. Despite this, there is a consensus on the proactive approach needed to prepare for hydrogen advancements. Legislative Council member Zhang Xinyu highlighted the importance of technological application to keep pace with developments. Additionally, Roundtable lawmaker Michael Tien Puk-sun mentioned the potential for testing hydrogen-powered heavy rail vehicles, contingent on advancements in hydrogen and electric technologies.
