Hyundai Motor Company is expanding its foothold in the hydrogen-powered electric vehicle market by announcing the establishment of its second hydrogen fuel cell production facility in Ulsan, South Korea. The company is currently in discussions with the Ulsan plant's labor union to build this new facility, located near the existing auto transmission manufacturing site. This hydrogen production plant will be Hyundai's second, with the first one situated in Guangzhou, China. The upcoming facility in Ulsan will be the first of its kind in South Korea, further emphasizing Hyundai's commitment to hydrogen technology. Construction is slated to begin this year, aiming for mass production by 2028. While the annual capacity of the Ulsan plant's hydrogen facility hasn't been revealed, Hyundai's Guangzhou plant currently produces hydrogen fuel cell systems for 6,500 vehicles per year. The fuel cells manufactured in Ulsan will power Hyundai's hydrogen vehicle lineup, including the Nexo SUV, Ele City buses, and hydrogen trucks. These fuel cell systems are currently sourced from Unitus, a subsidiary of Hyundai Mobis. To complement its hydrogen expansion, Hyundai is gearing up to introduce the Initium hydrogen SUV this year, touting an impressive range of 650 kilometers on a single charge. This move aligns with Hyundai's broader strategy to advance sustainable transportation solutions and promote the adoption of hydrogen fuel technology.
