The Indian government, led by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, has kickstarted pilot projects to deploy hydrogen-powered buses and trucks as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects involve testing 37 vehicles, including 15 hydrogen fuel cell-based and 22 hydrogen internal combustion engine-based, on ten designated routes spanning various cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, and Visakhapatnam. The objective is to promote the development of commercially viable hydrogen-based technologies in the transportation sector and establish essential infrastructure like hydrogen refueling stations. Major industry players like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC are key partners in these initiatives. The government has allocated Rs 208 crore for these projects, which are expected to be operational within the next 18 to 24 months. The primary goal is to validate the feasibility, technical performance, and economic viability of hydrogen-powered vehicles to lay a solid foundation for their widespread adoption in the future.
