Innovative Hydrogen-Ready Ferry Project for Sustainable Travel in Sweden
Key Ideas
  • Austal and Gotlandsbolaget are collaborating on a cutting-edge ferry project, aiming for climate-neutral travel and pioneering new technologies like hydrogen propulsion.
  • The Horizon X ferry will have multi-fuel capabilities and a unique propulsion system, designed to be converted to hydrogen once it becomes commercially viable.
  • Efforts to minimize energy consumption, optimize weight and energy efficiency, and enhance operational flows highlight a commitment to sustainable maritime practices.
  • Valued at US$168-175 million, the ferry will be constructed in the Philippines with a focus on using green aluminum manufactured with renewable energy sources.
Sweden's Gotlandsbolaget has partnered with Austal to develop a groundbreaking high-speed ferry project known as Horizon X. The aim of the project is to create a large, climate-neutral ferry that operates on sustainable solutions and serves as a pioneer for new technologies in the maritime sector. This 130-meter multi-fuel ferry design will have the flexibility to run on various fuel types, including hydrogen, once it becomes commercially available. The vessel will feature a cutting-edge combined-cycle propulsion system with gas and steam turbines, a first for high-speed crafts. Notably, the design is prepared for a future conversion to hydrogen. The companies involved emphasize the importance of multi-fuel capabilities to adapt to evolving alternative fuel options in the maritime industry. The ferry, capable of carrying 1,500 passengers and 400 cars at speeds up to 29 knots, is set to reduce travel time between the Swedish mainland and Gotland. With construction valued at US$168-175 million, the project focuses on energy efficiency, weight optimization, and operational streamlining. By using green aluminum manufactured with renewable energy, the project demonstrates a commitment to sustainability. Upon its delivery in mid-2028, the Horizon X ferry will contribute to climate-neutral crossings while offering an efficient onboard experience for travelers.
