Baker Hughes has announced a strategic partnership with Hanwha Power Systems and Hanwha Ocean to jointly develop small-size turbines tailored for ammonia applications. By integrating Baker Hughes' gas turbine technology with Hanwha's ammonia combustion system, the collaboration aims to introduce a new ammonia turbine with a power range of approximately 16MW. This innovative turbine is expected to find utility in marine, onshore, and offshore settings, catering to electric generation and mechanical drive needs. Hanwha Ocean will play a crucial role in implementing this solution in upcoming vessels. Hanwha's successful testing of a proof-of-concept combustor using 100% ammonia fuel, coupled with Baker Hughes' completion of initial turbine feasibility studies in 2024, set the stage for full engine testing with ammonia scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. Following successful testing, the ammonia turbine will be made available for commercial use, marking a significant advancement in sustainable energy solutions.
