JIVE 1 Project Successfully Deploys 131 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses Across Europe
Key Ideas
  • JIVE 1 project, led by ERM, deployed 131 hydrogen fuel cell buses in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK, achieving a range of up to 500km.
  • The project exceeded its fuel consumption targets with 6.5kg/100km, demonstrating the viability of hydrogen-powered buses in sustainable transport.
  • JIVE 2 will build on the success of JIVE 1, continuing until June 2025 to address challenges like reliability of hydrogen supplies for commercial operations.
  • Co-funded by the EU's Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the project received a €32m grant from FCH JU, contributing to the EU's carbon neutrality goals by 2050.
The JIVE 1 project, managed by Environmental Resources Management (ERM), has concluded its operations after successfully deploying 131 hydrogen fuel cell buses across various European countries including Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK. The initiative, aimed at advancing sustainable transport, achieved a significant milestone by hitting the target price of €650,000 for a standard 12m bus while showcasing a consistent range of up to 500km. Surpassing initial expectations, the buses demonstrated a fuel consumption rate of 6.5kg/100km, highlighting the efficiency and viability of hydrogen as a clean energy source in public transport. The upcoming JIVE 2 project will continue the initiative until June 2025, focusing on addressing key challenges such as the reliability of hydrogen supplies and refuelling stations crucial for commercial operations. Co-funded by the EU's Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the project received a €32m grant from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) under the European Union Horizon 2020 framework. The success of JIVE projects not only sets an example for the adoption of fuel cell buses in other European cities but also aligns with the EU's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The projects have provided valuable insights for public transport authorities, operators, and stakeholders interested in the integration of hydrogen in mobility applications, emphasizing the pivotal role of clean energy in sustainable transportation.
