Liebherr Unveils Hydrogen-Powered Wheel Loader in Salzburg
Key Ideas
  • Liebherr showcased a hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered large wheel loader in Salzburg, highlighting the use of hydrogen for heavy-duty machines.
  • The company believes hydrogen ICEs are ideal for machines up to 40 tonnes, complementing battery-electric solutions for smaller vehicles.
  • Liebherr collaborated with zepp.solutions to convert excavators to hydrogen fuel cell systems, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.
  • The opening of a Maximator-manufactured hydrogen refuelling station in Salzburg marks a milestone in Liebherr's decarbonisation efforts for construction machinery.
Liebherr recently introduced a hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered large wheel loader named the L 566 H in a live demonstration held in Salzburg, Austria. The prototype machine, powered by a reciprocating piston engine from Liebherr’s Bulle plant in Switzerland, is designed for heavy-duty applications with operating weights of up to 40 tonnes. The company emphasized that while battery-electric solutions are suitable for smaller vehicles, hydrogen ICEs are ideal for larger machines. Liebherr's initiative aligns with the construction site applications, showcasing the feasibility of hydrogen technology. This event follows the conversion of two Liebherr excavators to hydrogen fuel cell systems by zepp.solutions last year. In addition to the wheel loader demonstration, Liebherr inaugurated its own Maximator-manufactured hydrogen refuelling station at the Bischofshofen site. This station, the first in Salzburg, is a strategic move to support Liebherr's ongoing endeavors in decarbonising construction machinery. Dr. Herbert Pfab, Liebherr Bischofshofen's Chief Technical Officer, highlighted the importance of access to hydrogen for advancing research in this field. The collaboration between Liebherr and zepp.solutions includes developing mobile refuelling facilities to enable on-site refuelling for construction machinery. The company's commitment to innovation and sustainability was further evidenced by its proactive approach towards incorporating hydrogen technology in heavy machinery.
