Montgomery County, Maryland, in partnership with AlphaStruxure and Pepco, broke ground on the David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operation Center (EMTOC) microgrid project. The EMTOC facility will host an on-site electrolyzer powered by solar and battery energy storage, becoming the first transit bus depot on the East Coast to produce green hydrogen. The project aims to power 200 hydrogen fuel cell and battery-electric buses for Ride-On Montgomery, contributing to the county's goal of net zero emissions by 2035. This initiative aligns with a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and enhance transit service resilience. The microgrid includes solar generation, battery storage, charging capacity, and a hydrogen electrolyzer, ensuring uninterrupted service during power outages.
