Key Ideas
  • magniX and NASA collaborate in developing hybrid-electric regional aircraft technology to reduce emissions by the mid-2030s.
  • The Dash 7 aircraft will be retrofitted with a hybrid electric system for testing at Grant County International Airport in 2026.
  • Sen. Maria Cantwell commends the partnership, highlighting the potential of electric and hydrogen powertrains to enhance regional flights and benefit local communities.
  • The project is expected to create 50 new jobs at magniX's Everett facility and Moses Lake testing site, advancing electric propulsion systems for future aircraft.
magniX, a transportation electrification company based in Everett, is collaborating with NASA on the Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) project to develop technology for hybrid-electric regional aircraft. This partnership aims to showcase electrified aircraft propulsion technology to reduce emissions from commercial aircraft by the mid-2030s. A special unveiling ceremony was held at Seattle's Boeing Field to reveal the Dash 7 aircraft, which will serve as a testbed for NASA's EPFD project. The Dash 7 will be retrofitted with a hybrid electric system, integrating one hybrid-electric propulsion system and two magniX electric propulsion units with two conventional combustion engines. Test flights are scheduled to commence at the Grant County International Airport in Moses Lake in 2026. Sen. Maria Cantwell praised the collaboration, emphasizing the potential of electric and hydrogen powertrains to enhance regional flights and support small and rural communities. The project is anticipated to generate 50 new jobs at magniX's Everett facility and Moses Lake testing site, contributing to the advancement of electric propulsion systems for the next generation of aircraft.
