Norwegian Project Awarded NOK 300 Million to Develop Hydrogen-Powered Vessels
Key Ideas
- Enova has awarded NOK 300 million in innovation funding to Maris Fiducia Norway AS, with subcontractors HAV Hydrogen and Norwegian Hydrogen, to develop five hydrogen-powered dry-bulk vessels.
- The vessels will operate on hydrogen fuel, showcasing the feasibility of hydrogen technologies for shipping while contributing to significant emission reductions in the maritime sector.
- Norwegian Hydrogen will provide the green hydrogen fuel supply for the vessels, emphasizing practical steps towards decarbonizing the maritime industry.
- The project aims to support the development of zero-emission vessel technologies and contribute to Norway's climate goals for 2050 with Enova's program 'hydrogen in vessels'.
Enova, a Norwegian state-owned entity, has allocated NOK 300 million in innovation funding to Maris Fiducia Norway AS, supported by HAV Hydrogen and Norwegian Hydrogen, to develop, build, and operate five hydrogen-powered dry-bulk vessels. The grant is part of Enova's 'hydrogen in vessels' program, which aims to promote market change by backing companies utilizing hydrogen as a fuel in vessels and advancing zero-emission vessel technologies. Maris Fiducia Norway, a subsidiary of Dutch shipowner Maris Fiducia, will oversee the management and operation of these vessels. The vessels, designed for efficiency and low fuel consumption, will feature a dual fuel hydrogen ICE coupled with fuel cells for auxiliary power. Additionally, the vessels will be equipped with Zero Emission Pods (ZEPODs), ensuring a complete hydrogen energy system onboard. HAV Hydrogen is developing the ZEPODs, with each unit capable of running all auxiliary systems on the carriers. Norwegian Hydrogen, a leading hydrogen producer, will supply green hydrogen fuel for the vessels, emphasizing the collaborative effort towards decarbonization in the maritime sector. This project signifies a significant step towards commercializing hydrogen-based energy systems for ships and aligns with Norway's climate goals for 2050. Enova's support underscores the commitment to fostering energy and climate technologies for a sustainable future.
