OXCCU Launches Sustainable Aviation Fuel Demo Plant at London Oxford Airport
Key Ideas
  • OXCCU has inaugurated its first demonstration plant for sustainable aviation fuel at London Oxford Airport, utilizing a groundbreaking single-step process.
  • The plant aims to convert CO2 and hydrogen into long-chain hydrocarbons, named OX FUEL, with high efficiency, reducing the cost barrier of Power-to-Liquid SAF.
  • The demonstration plant is anticipated to pave the way for a larger facility in 2026 and has garnered significant investment, including from companies like Aramco and United Airlines.
  • With a focus on decarbonizing the aviation sector, OXCCU's CEO expressed optimism about the plant's role in advancing cost-effective SAF production for a greener future.
OXCCU has unveiled its initial sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) demonstration plant, OX1, at London Oxford Airport in the UK. This plant will undertake the ground-breaking task of converting CO2 and hydrogen directly into long-chain hydrocarbons, specifically for SAF use, under the brand OX FUEL. The innovative single-step process developed by OXCCU is expected to streamline production and reduce costs associated with SAF, addressing a key hurdle in its widespread adoption. The OX1 plant, scheduled to start operations in September 2024, will be the first of its kind globally, producing 1kg of liquid fuel daily. It will serve as a crucial data source for the design and operation of the planned OX2 facility, set to be operational in 2026 at Saltend Chemical Park Hull. By simplifying what was once a multi-step process into a single step, OXCCU aims to bypass the intermediate CO conversion stage, enhancing efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Andrew Symes, CEO of OXCCU, highlighted the significance of the plant in accelerating decarbonization efforts within the aviation industry. He emphasized the strategic importance of scaling up production to achieve the goal of sustainable and affordable Power-to-Liquid (PtL) SAF, essential for reducing the climate impact of flying. The company's recent successful Series A financing of $22.7m, supported by major players like Aramco and United Airlines, underscores industry confidence in OXCCU's SAF technology. Overall, the launch of the OX1 plant represents a positive step towards a greener aviation future, aligning with the broader shift towards sustainable practices in the industry. OXCCU's innovative approach and strategic partnerships position it well to drive significant advancements in SAF production and contribute to a more environmentally conscious aviation sector.
