RWE Commissions 14 MW Hydrogen Electrolyser in Lingen, Germany
Key Ideas
  • RWE commissions a 14 MW pilot electrolyser plant in Lingen, Germany, capable of producing 270 kg/h of green hydrogen using renewable electricity.
  • The plant features two electrolysis technologies and will provide insights for future industrial-scale hydrogen facilities.
  • German government officials emphasize the importance of electrolysis in achieving climate-neutral economic growth and decarbonization of industry.
  • Lower Saxony emerges as a leading hub for hydrogen production, with significant investments to establish a hydrogen economy and infrastructure.
In Lingen, Germany, RWE has inaugurated a 14 MW pilot electrolyser plant at its Emsland gas-fired power plant site. The facility can produce up to 270 kg/h of green hydrogen utilizing renewable energy sources. The pilot plant, with two different electrolysis technologies, aims to offer valuable insights for the development of large-scale hydrogen facilities. A 100 MW electrolyser is planned for commissioning by 2025, with a capacity expansion to 300 MW by 2027 as part of the GET H2 Nukleus project. Government officials, including Federal Minister Robert Habeck and Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil, highlighted the significance of hydrogen in achieving climate goals and fostering sustainable economic growth. The Lower Saxony government provided €8 million in funding for the pilot electrolyser and additional financial support for the 300 MW electrolyser project. The hydrogen produced will initially be used in the power plant's gas turbine and later be made available for hydrogen-powered vehicles. The initiative aims to establish a hydrogen grid connecting production facilities in Lingen to industrial consumers in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, contributing to the growth of the hydrogen economy. Overall, the project signifies a significant step towards decarbonization, with strong governmental and industrial support towards establishing Germany as a leader in green hydrogen production and utilization.
