The Malinauskas Labor Government in South Australia has secured a groundbreaking agreement with ATCO Australia and GE Vernova to supply the world's first 100% hydrogen-capable gas turbines for the Whyalla hydrogen power plant. This landmark agreement, signed during COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, solidifies South Australia's position as a global leader in renewable energy. The core of this project is GE Vernova's LM6000VELOX aeroderivative gas turbines, engineered to run on renewable hydrogen fuel sourced from the state's abundant wind and solar farms. The Whyalla plant is expected to deliver 200 MW of clean power, ensuring energy security during intermittent periods of wind and solar power generation. ATCO Australia has placed an order for four LM6000VELOX units, with commissioning scheduled for early 2026. This project marks the first commercial-scale deployment of GE Vernova's aeroderivative gas turbine combustion technology capable of running on 100% hydrogen.
