The South Australian Government has partnered with ATCO Australia to introduce cutting-edge technology to the Whyalla hydrogen power plant. This collaboration, announced during the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, involves GE Vernova supplying advanced aeroderivative gas turbines capable of running on 100% renewable hydrogen. The agreement showcases South Australia's dedication to renewable energy innovation, with Premier Peter Malinauskas emphasizing the state's leadership in clean energy transition. The Whyalla hydrogen power plant, a crucial element of South Australia's Hydrogen Jobs Plan, will utilize GE Vernova's LM6000VELOX turbines to produce clean energy using the region's abundant wind and solar resources. ATCO Australia has secured four of these turbines for the project, marking a significant milestone as the first commercial-scale deployment of GE Vernova's aeroderivative turbines exclusively designed for hydrogen operation.
